Somalia, Eritrea, and Egypt Forge New Era of Cooperation at Asmara Summit

AQRI.net Report from Asmara, Eritrea – A historic trilateral summit held in Asmara, Eritrea, on October 10, 2024, brought together the leaders of Somalia, Eritrea, and Egypt to discuss key regional and international issues. The summit, hosted by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, saw Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi engaging in comprehensive consultations that signal a new era of cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

The discussions focused on enhancing regional stability, fostering collaboration, and reaffirming the core principles of international law. Among the significant outcomes was a joint commitment to uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations in the region, an essential step for Somalia as it continues its efforts to rebuild its institutions and assert its authority.

The summit also underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to promote peace, particularly through strengthening the Somali National Army’s capacity to combat terrorism and protect its borders. Notably, Egypt pledged to support Somalia by contributing peacekeeping forces, a move that was welcomed by all leaders.

In addition, the leaders agreed to establish a trilateral joint committee, led by the Foreign Ministers of Eritrea, Egypt, and Somalia. This committee will further enhance strategic cooperation, reflecting a shared dedication to addressing common challenges and securing stability in the region.
